Osteoarthritis is a degenerative "wear and tear" condition of the cartlidge in the knee joint. As the cartlidge wear away the ability to protect and cushion the bone is decreased. Eventually the joint space narrows and this results in "bone on bone" rubbing. Osteoarthritis occurs over time and causes joint pain and swelling along with catching and popping sensations.
